I sink to the floor. The tears that had been threatening finally begin to fall. Who the hell am I trying to kid? It’s always been more. At least for me. I don’t know what possessed me to think I could do this – casual and reckless – with him. He wasn’t just any man. He was exactly what I had always dreamed of.

Jen rushes to my side. “Callie, is everything okay?”

I wipe away the tears. “Everything is fine.”

“Really? Then what was all that shouting?” she asks.

“Emmy didn’t hear that, did she?” I ask panicked. When Ryan and I would fight it would terrify her. I swore I would never do that to her again.

“She was so exhausted I am pretty sure she could sleep through a tornado. She didn’t hear a thing. Now tell me what the hell happened?”

“I panicked,” I admit. “I was afraid Chase was going to want to come in.”

“So, what did you do?” she asks.

“Said some things I probably shouldn’t have. Worst of it being referring to him as just my fuck buddy.”

“What were you hoping to accomplish with that?” I can hear the frustration in Jen’s voice. She’s not even trying to hide the frustration in her voice anymore.

“I don’t know, Jen, okay? All I knew was that he couldn’t come in here. And he knows I’m hiding something and –“

“You had the perfect chance to tell him Callie.”

“It doesn’t matter. We’re not serious.” Even I’m not convinced by my statement.

Jen shakes her head and laughs. “Not serious? Are you kidding me, Cal? He is crazy about you and you’re crazy about him, too. I don’t get it. I don’t get why you won’t try to be happy. Why you continue to punish yourself for Ryan being a dick and destroying your marriage. You deserve happiness Callie, and so does Emmy. And if there is a chance that Chase can make you happy, you better get off your ass and do something about it.”

She’s right.

“I really messed this up,” I admit to Jen who most definitely doesn’t disagree.

“It’s not too late to fix this. But you’ll have to stop lying to yourself first.”
